Jackson County, OR
The County implemented the flashing yellow arrow with minimal trouble
using the command box feature of the Wapiti local controller firmware. The County did express concern over what the flashing yellow arrow display
does during emergency vehicle preempt from the opposite direction. The
command box logic could be configured such that the flashing yellow arrow
display would go dark when opposing emergency vehicle preemption was
detected.
Intersection Management
Traffic control is managed with Type 170E controllers, with Wapiti
firmware. Special logic was developed through the command box feature.
Jackson County is the only implementing agency to implement the
flashing yellow arrow with a red arrow clearance between the yellow
clearance arrow and the onset of the flashing yellow arrow display.
Reported problems
The County has received very positive responses from the community and
local law agencies to both the 4-section and 3-section flashing yellow
arrow display. The local police department has a public information
section in the local newspaper called “Cops Corner.” One particular issue
of Cops Corner was about the flashing yellow arrow installation. Local law
enforcement supported the flashing yellow arrow use. Subsequently, local
citizens wrote in to the County Traffic Engineer. All responses were in
support of the flashing yellow arrow.
